About this site

This is a hobby project by Darjan Panič. It does one thing: deals you a single card from the 22 Major Arcana and tells you what it means. No account, no email, no paywall, and no plans for any.

Why it exists

Most free tarot draws online want something from you — an email before the reading, an upsell to a paid interpretation, or a page so heavy with ads that the card is an afterthought. I wanted the version that just deals a card, so I built it.

It started as an excuse to play with CSS 3D transforms and ended up with 22 card pages, a yes-or-no draw, a three-card spread and a card of the day. That is roughly how hobby projects go.

How the card meanings were written

Every card page — upright, reversed, love, career, the yes-or-no answer and the advice line — was written for this site. They are not scraped from another tarot site or pasted from a public-domain book, which is why the wording differs from the sources you will find elsewhere.

They follow mainstream Rider-Waite-Smith readings rather than inventing new ones. Where readers disagree — and they do, particularly on reversals and on which cards count as a yes — the pages say so instead of pretending there is one correct answer.

How the artwork was made

The 22 card illustrations were generated with AI (Midjourney), then selected, edited and assembled into a consistent deck by hand — one flat editorial style with halftone texture across all 22 cards and the card back.

They are not the classic Pamela Colman Smith illustrations, and they depart from them in places: the Fool is a woman here, the Sun’s rider is clothed, Death rides a black horse. Each card page describes its own artwork, so you can read what is on the card you drew rather than what is on a deck you do not own.

It is open

The card meanings, the illustrations and the flip component are published at github.com/darisi/halftone-arcana. The code is MIT, the written meanings are CC BY 4.0, and the images are offered under CC BY with an honest note about what an AI-generated image can and cannot be licensed as.

Contact

Corrections to a card meaning, a bug in the draw, or anything else: darjanpanic.com. Corrections are welcome — the meanings are opinions, not scripture, and I would rather fix a bad one than defend it.

What this is not

It is for reflection and entertainment. It does not predict the future, and it is not a substitute for advice from someone qualified on anything medical, legal or financial. If a card ever seems to be telling you to do something consequential, that is you doing the telling.
